Xbox Disc2Digital lets you convert physical games to digital — and the license moves with the disc
Microsoft has officially announced Disc2Digital, a feature that converts physical Xbox game discs into permanent digital entitlements tied to your account. Xbox corporate VP Asha Sharma made the announcement on August 26, with an Xbox Insider beta opening August 31. General availability follows later, with no firm date yet confirmed.
How it works
Insert a supported disc, install the game, and launch it once while signed into your Microsoft account. That's it — you get a digital license for the game, and you no longer need the disc in the drive to play. The process works with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S discs, including multi-disc editions. Xbox 360 and original Xbox games are not supported, and not every title will be available at launch — Xbox Wire says the supported library will expand over time.
Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs. It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving. Starting next week, XBOX Insiders can unlock a digital entitlement for supported physical games. We’ll start with thousands of titles and add more as we can. pic.twitter.com/XATsa8sjBt

The ownership angle
The most consumer-friendly detail: the digital entitlement is tied to the physical disc, not your account permanently. If you sell or loan that disc to someone else, the license transfers to them — and your access goes away. One physical copy, one active license, wherever the disc is. That model preserves the second-hand market in a way that pure digital storefronts have never managed.
The feature also plugs into Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where applicable, meaning eligible titles could be playable on PC or streamed without any extra purchase.
Why it matters now
This lands at an interesting moment. GameSpot notes that roughly 90% of Xbox game sales are already digital, yet Microsoft is doubling down on disc support rather than abandoning it — a deliberate contrast with PlayStation's direction. Sony's hardware is moving away from disc drives, with physical media expected to exit the PlayStation ecosystem by 2028.
Microsoft has history here. In 2013, the Xbox One reveal included a digital-only licensing model that sparked immediate and massive backlash, forcing the company into a public reversal within weeks. Disc2Digital reads as a more measured approach: give players the digital convenience they increasingly want without stripping away the ownership rights that come with a physical purchase.
The Insider beta on August 31 will be the first real test of whether the system works as advertised.
