CD Projekt Shows 12 Minutes of Witcher 3 Expansion Gameplay

CD Projekt Red has released a 12-minute commented gameplay walkthrough of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past, the first new expansion for the 2015 RPG in nearly a decade. Lead level designer Miles Tost guides the footage, which was also playable on the gamescom floor on August 25. The expansion arrives in 2027, but the free remastered base game drops first on September 29, 2026.

The new region

The video splits into two sequences. In the first, Geralt arrives by boat in Letten — a northern region described as calm and rural — to visit Dandelion's ancestral manor. In the second, Geralt and the bard's young cousin head into the Thorn Forest to investigate something going wrong there. Letten is roughly the same size as Toussaint from Blood and Wine, CD Projekt's benchmark for a full-scale expansion. Developer Fool's Theory, a Polish studio staffed largely by Witcher 2 and Witcher 3 veterans, has also built out NPC daily routines more thoroughly than the original game ever did — every character now follows their own schedule.

What's in the remaster

Songs of the Past is exclusive to The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered, which launches September 29, 2026 as a free upgrade for existing owners on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The remaster brings path tracing, DLSS 4.5, reworked combat, and both previous expansions — Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine — included at no extra cost. Nintendo Switch 2 is also a confirmed platform, though the exact upgrade path for Switch owners hasn't been clarified yet.

The longer picture

The expansion bridges the story toward The Witcher 4, currently scheduled for 2028. Fool's Theory is co-developing alongside CD Projekt with a combined team of around 190 people. No pricing for the expansion has been announced; given the Blood and Wine and Phantom Liberty comparisons in scale, a standalone price is expected but unconfirmed.
