GTA 6's cars need fuel, smarter theft tools, and a lot more respect

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and new details from journalists and content creators who've seen pre-release material confirm one thing: cars work completely differently this time. Rockstar has rebuilt the entire vehicle system — physics, theft, fuel, damage, and storage — into something that leans closer to simulation than the series has ever gone before.

The driving feel

The physics model blends the weight-sensitive handling of GTA 4 with the accessibility of GTA 5. Drive type, tires, suspension, and steering all feed into how each car behaves. Sportscars become nearly useless off-road. Top speeds for the fastest vehicles are meaningfully higher than in GTA 5. Rockstar reportedly hired real racing drivers to consult on vehicle dynamics, per GTABase.

Crashes now trigger a Burnout-style slow-motion camera on big impacts — switchable off in settings. Blown-out tires can send cars into spins and rollovers. Damage is detailed and consequential.

Fuel, charging, and the Waink app

Combustion vehicles need refueling at gas stations; electric cars plug into dedicated charging points. The process is fast — around 10 seconds per fill-up in footage seen so far — but Destructoid notes that Rockstar developers were aware of the friction risk and designed the system to challenge without frustrating. Neither the fuel mechanic nor EV charging has been officially confirmed in a Rockstar press release; both come from leaker and previewer reports.

Stealing high-end cars no longer means smashing a window. Expensive vehicles require digital key cloners and specialist tools, unlocked by completing jobs for chop-shop contacts. Before you even attempt a theft, the Waink app scans the target and displays alarm type, required tools, GPS tracker level, car value, and legalization cost. Some cars silently ping police if driven slowly for too long after theft.

Garages, trunks, and heist prep

Players can buy garages to store stolen vehicles before cleaning their records — but free-roam house purchases are out. Rockstar's explanation: Jason and Lucia are always on the run, so property ownership doesn't fit the story.

Trunk capacity now varies by vehicle class. A motorcycle carries almost nothing; a large van fits multiple bags of cash. Choosing the right getaway car directly affects how a job plays out and how much you walk away with.

Pay 'n' Spray shops return for quick resprays and repairs. Deeper tuning requires visiting multiple specialist workshops across Leonida — no single all-in-one garage. Nitrous is confirmed.

Traffic density is significantly higher than GTA 5, narrow streets will make high-speed escapes harder, and if your personal car gets flagged in a crime, police may stake it out even after you've lost your wanted level. Leave it too long and it goes to impound.

PC players will have to wait — a port isn't expected until 2027 or 2028, according to TheSoftwareKings. Standard Edition is listed at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99 at US retailers, though Rockstar hasn't formally confirmed pricing.
