Double Fine wants $100M to make Brütal Legend 2 — and it's asking Kickstarter
Double Fine is back on Kickstarter — and it brought a wish list. The studio, which broke away from Microsoft in July 2026 after a major Xbox restructure, launched its Amnesia Fortnight 2026 campaign on August 31 with a $400,000 base goal. Buried in the stretch goals is a $100 million target that would greenlight Brütal Legend 2, the long-requested sequel to the 2009 heavy-metal action game. Independence has a price: the studio cut 23 staff — about 25% of its workforce — to make the split work.
The campaign
Amnesia Fortnight is Double Fine's in-house game jam, last held in 2019. This time it's public and crowdfunded. The studio has put forward 26 game pitches; backers vote to select four for prototype development, and then the community picks one winner. That game gets a full release under the new Double Fine Action Labs label. It's a model the studio used before — the 2012 Kickstarter for Broken Age helped define what crowdfunded games could be.
The $100 million Brütal Legend 2 goal is real, in the sense that it's printed on the campaign page. Whether it's a genuine target is another question. Kotaku and others have flagged it as aspirational at best — a pointed joke about what it actually costs to make a major game without a publisher's backing. Fans have spent years asking Microsoft to fund a sequel; Microsoft never did, and now Double Fine has to find the money itself.
Life after Xbox
The independence backstory matters here. As The Game Business reported, Xbox cut 3,200 jobs and divested several studios in July 2026 under new CEO Asha Sharma. Double Fine was among those cut loose, though it kept all its IP and received some runway funding to stay afloat. Tim Schafer confirmed the layoffs were unavoidable — the cost of not being absorbed into a larger corporate structure.
That context reframes Amnesia Fortnight. It's not just a fun community event; it's a financing strategy. The studio is simultaneously building games, auditioning talent, generating press, and tapping fans directly for cash — all without a publisher safety net.

Brütal Legend itself came out in 2009 and starred Jack Black as Eddie Riggs, a roadie who gets transported to a fantasy world built from heavy-metal mythology. It was well-reviewed, sold modestly, and has had a devoted cult following ever since. A sequel has been a fan request for over a decade.
Whether Amnesia Fortnight hits its base goal — let alone nine figures — the campaign is a clear signal about where mid-size independent studios are headed when the big publishers walk away.
