Acer's DualPlay Mini concept turns a gaming handheld into a tiny laptop
Acer has unveiled Project DualPlay Mini at IFA 2026 in Berlin — a gaming handheld that physically folds open to reveal a backlit keyboard. The 8-inch device borrows its dual-fan cooling setup from the Predator Atlas 8 and runs an unspecified Intel processor. It has no price, no release date, and is explicitly a concept, but it's the most interesting thing Acer showed at the show.
The look
In standard mode, DualPlay Mini looks like any other Windows handheld: analog sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, and shoulder controls flanking the screen. Flip the hinge and a Chiclet-style backlit keyboard appears; pivot the display up and over and you have something that looks like a tiny clamshell laptop.

Acer says the keyboard layout makes first-person shooters and strategy games more precise when paired with a mouse — a fair claim given how cramped touchscreen or on-screen controls get in those genres. The device also connects to an external monitor, which pushes it closer to a genuine portable workstation.

The claim
The dual-fan system mirrors the one in the Predator Atlas 8, which launched in the UK at £1,099–£1,299 on Currys from September 23. That's the hardware baseline DualPlay Mini appears to build on, though Acer hasn't confirmed which Intel chip sits inside or disclosed weight and battery capacity — both critical unknowns for a device promising to pull double duty as a gaming console and a laptop.
This is also not the first time Acer has shown this idea. The concept appeared at IFA 2024 and again at CES 2025 before resurfacing now, per XDA Developers. That pattern suggests Acer is gauging market appetite before committing to production rather than preparing an imminent launch.
Likely to ship?
The premium handheld market has moved fast. The MSI Claw 8 EX sits above $1,799, and Acer's own Predator Atlas 7 arrives in North America in November 2026 at over $1,500. DualPlay Mini would need to land at a price that justifies the extra keyboard hardware without pricing itself out of a bracket already crowded with capable single-mode rivals.
For now, it's a concept. A genuinely useful one — but a concept all the same, as Engadget notes.
