Xiaomi 18 Fold debuts September 7 with a new 'mid-fold' format — but don't expect it at your carrier
Xiaomi's new flagship foldable, the 18 Fold, launches in China on September 7, 2026 — two days before Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone. The phone starts at around ¥12,000 (roughly $1,650), but Xiaomi has not confirmed any release outside China, and the company's previous Mix Fold devices never left its home market.

The mid-fold pitch
Xiaomi calls the 18 Fold a "mid-fold" — a form factor designed to sit between the bulky book-style foldables (think Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8) and the smaller flip phones that sacrifice screen real estate. Folded, it's roughly passport-sized with a 5.38-inch cover display, compact enough for one-handed use. Open it and you get a 7.58-inch inner screen with an aspect ratio that looks close to 4:3, suited to split-screen multitasking. Xiaomi's mobile chief Lu Weibing described it as an "ultra-flagship" built to compete directly with top-tier conventional smartphones, not just other foldables.
The design shown features a red colorway with a horizontal triple-camera block on the back. Optics were co-developed with Leica, consistent with Xiaomi's recent flagship lineup. The hinge is an updated "Dragon Bone" design, and the phone carries an IP68 water-resistance rating.

The chip and software
Inside is Xiaomi's own XRing O3 — a 3nm, 10-core processor built with LPDDR6 RAM from Chinese memory maker CXMT. Xiaomi claims an 85% GPU improvement over its predecessor, though those figures are self-reported and independent benchmarks won't arrive until after the September 7 launch. The phone runs Surge OS 4 with an on-device AI model called MiMo AI.
What this means outside China
If you're in the US or UK, the honest answer is: probably nothing yet. Xiaomi has not announced carrier partnerships, retail listings, or a global launch date, per NPowerUser. The pattern from Mix Fold 1 through 4 suggests these devices often stay China-exclusive. That said, the September 7 event also introduces the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max tablet and a new electric vehicle lineup — Android Authority notes the timing is a clear shot across Apple's bow ahead of its own foldable reveal. Whether the 18 Fold ever reaches Western shelves will depend on Xiaomi's global ambitions — and regulatory clearance for its AI software stack.
