Xiaomi Smart Switch 2 solves the neutral-wire problem — but you can't buy it

The biggest headache with smart light switches — the need for a neutral wire — has a clean solution in Xiaomi's new Smart Switch 2. The device auto-detects whether it's connected to a two-wire or three-wire circuit, skipping the manual configuration that trips up most DIY installs. The catch: it's only on sale in China, via crowdfunding, for 69 yuan (around $10).

The neutral-wire fix

Older homes in the US and UK frequently lack a neutral wire at the switch. That single missing wire is why popular switches from brands like TP-Link Kasa and LIFX require an electrician visit or expensive adapter kits. Lutron Caseta and GE Enbrighten have addressed the problem with their own workarounds, but those cost $50–$70 per switch. Xiaomi's auto-detection approach is more elegant — and far cheaper — but remains unavailable to Western buyers for now.

The switch itself is built from V-0 flame-retardant polycarbonate with an acrylic glass panel. Xiaomi offers one-, two-, and three-button configurations. The buttons use short-travel silicone mechanics, making them quieter than typical mechanical switches. Each button has its own status LED. The relay is rated for one million on/off cycles — longer than most home renovations.

Smart home features

The Smart Switch 2 runs on Xiaomi's Mesh 2.0 protocol and connects to the Mi Home ecosystem. Each button supports three interaction modes: single press, double press, and long press — useful for triggering different scenes without extra hardware.

There's also a wireless mode that turns the physical buttons into scene controllers rather than direct light switches. One press could turn off every light in the flat and close the blinds simultaneously. The switch circuit is also tuned for low-wattage LED bulbs, preventing the faint flickering some smart switches cause when the load is too small.

Not coming to a retailer near you

Xiaomi Youpin, the crowdfunding platform hosting the launch, is China-exclusive. Xiaomi's pattern with smart home hardware has been a 12–18 month lag between a China debut and any European listing — and plenty of products never make the jump at all. There's no Smart Switch 2 SKU on mi.com for the US or UK, and no release date has been announced.

For US and UK buyers wanting a neutral-wire-free smart switch today, Lutron Caseta remains the most widely recommended option, with Enbrighten a budget alternative. Xiaomi's $10 price point is compelling on paper, but for now it exists in a market most Western shoppers can't reach.
