Metro 2039 now has a firm release date — February 4, 2027 — after 4A Games debuted a gameplay trailer at PlayStation's State of Play on September 3, 2026. The footage was captured on PS5 Pro at 4K 60fps with full ray tracing, making it the first Metro title built from the ground up around that technology. It lands in a packed February alongside Fable, God of War: Ragnarök Laufey, and Persona 4 Revival, giving the franchise a high-profile slot to compete for attention.

What's in the trailer

The sequence follows the new protagonist, known as The Stranger, surfacing from the Metro tunnels and picking through the ruined streets of Moscow. A detour into an abandoned dental clinic ends with a mutant encounter — par for the course in this series — and a close look at what appears to be a UV-emitting gadget whose purpose isn't yet clear. Two new pieces of kit are confirmed: the Shatun, a stealth weapon, and breaching charges that hint at more tactical options than previous entries. The footage is pre-release beta, so final visuals may differ, but what's shown is already striking.

The studio behind it

4A Games was founded in Kyiv in 2005 and is now headquartered in Malta, but the majority of its 200-plus-person team continues to develop the game in Ukraine, per Games Press Official, amid Russia's ongoing invasion. The studio has publicly committed to supporting Ukraine through the United24 initiative. The State of Play appearance marks 4A Games' first showcase at one of Sony's flagship events — a notable step up in visibility for a studio that has quietly built one of the most atmospheric shooter franchises in PC and console gaming.

Platforms and availability

Metro 2039 launches simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store, according to GameSpot. A Collector's Edition has been teased but not detailed. Pricing has not been announced for any edition or region. The story is written by 4A Games in collaboration with Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the original Metro novels, with antagonist Hunter leading the Novoreich regime as the central threat.
