Colour Brightness Is the Daylight Argument

Try this the next time a bright projector arrives. Open the curtains, throw a 100-inch image on the wall, and put on something with human faces and green grass in it. Watch what happens to skin. On a lot of single-chip projectors the whites stay bright while faces slide toward grey and grass loses its bite, because the white and the colour are not coming out of the machine in equal measure. The HC3800 holds colour where it should be, and after six weeks that is the difference I kept noticing rather than any headline number.

The mechanism is not complicated. A 3LCD light engine splits the lamp into red, green and blue, sends each to its own panel and recombines them, so every colour is on screen for the whole frame. A single-chip design puts one panel behind a spinning wheel and shows colours in sequence, which means white gets a clear slot and colours share what is left. Manufacturers using that approach rate white brightness and stay quiet about colour, and the gap only shows up when you are fighting a window.

One number on a projector box tells you how bright a white slide looks. A second number, which most brands decline to print, tells you how bright a face looks. Daylight viewing is decided entirely by the second one.

Now the part Epson would rather I skipped. The 3,000 lumen figure belongs to Dynamic mode, and independent measurement put that mode at 2,912 ANSI lumens with a mild green cast, which is honest enough. The modes you will actually use are dimmer: roughly 2,269 lumens in Bright Cinema and 2,176 in Natural at full lamp power, dropping to about 1,683 and 1,615 in ECO. That is still plenty for a 100-inch screen with lamps on, and it is nowhere near the number on the carton. Read the box figure as a ceiling and the Bright Cinema figure as your Sunday afternoon.

Out of the box colour is unusually well behaved. Natural mode measures most colour errors below a Delta E of three, which is the threshold where the eye stops finding fault, and Bright Cinema and Cinema sit only slightly behind it. Dynamic has the green push every projector's brightest mode has, though it is mild by the standards of this class and stays watchable for daytime sport. Five minutes in the menu on the first evening, picking Natural for daytime and Cinema for after dark, gets you most of what a calibration would.

Lens Shift, Zoom and Rooms That Are the Wrong Shape

Most projector reviews treat placement as an afterthought, and most projector returns happen because of it. In plain terms the projector can sit on a low table below the screen, on a shelf at the back of the room, or upside down in a ceiling mount, and you correct the geometry with glass instead of with maths. That distinction is the whole point, because optical shift moves the image without touching a single pixel while keystone correction throws pixels away to fake the same result.

The afternoon that made the case was a Sunday match with the bay window uncovered, where the pitch stayed properly green instead of drifting toward olive. The evening that reminded me what I had paid was a dark film with long night exteriors, where the letterbox bars sat visibly grey against the wall and stayed that way. A lamp-based projector built for brightness behaves exactly like that, and both halves are the same design decision seen from opposite ends.

Lamp Hours, Fan Noise and What Ownership Costs

Lamp hours and the number that surprised me. Epson quotes 3,500 hours at High power, 4,000 at Medium and 5,000 in ECO, which is ordinary for a 250W lamp. The unusual part is the replacement. The ELPLP85 module sells for roughly $99, where plenty of rivals want three or four times that for a part you will eventually need. On three hours a night in Medium mode you are looking at something close to four years before the question arises, and then it costs about as much as a decent HDMI cable and a takeaway. That changes the ownership arithmetic more than most spec sheets admit.

Noise, power and what to buy next. Fan noise is rated at 24 dB in ECO, 32 dB in Medium and 35 dB in High. ECO is quiet enough to forget in a silent room, Medium is audible in pauses and acceptable with any ambient noise, and High is loud enough that I only used it with the curtains open and the room already busy. The pattern that works is bright modes for bright rooms and ECO after dark, which is what you would do anyway. First accessory to buy is a screen, because a matte white surface does more for perceived contrast than any menu setting. Second is a ceiling mount if the projector is staying put, since manual focus means every knock to the shelf becomes a small job.

Corner Focus and Two Numbers I Do Not Trust

Start with the fault that owners raise and the marketing does not. A recurring complaint on this model and its stablemate is focus uniformity, meaning the centre of the image sharpens beautifully while one or two corners stay slightly soft, and no amount of turning the focus ring brings all four into agreement at once. Several owners report replacing units and finding the same behaviour, which points at the 12-element lens design rather than at a bad batch. Review samples are frequently pre-screened, so a reviewer can easily miss what a buyer sees. Order somewhere with a painless return policy, throw up a spreadsheet on day one, and look at the corners before you mount anything.

Now the first number. That 100,000:1 contrast rating is measured full on against full off with the auto iris running, which means the projector is comparing a full white frame with a fully closed shutter. Native contrast, the ratio you actually see inside a single frame with bright and dark elements together, is a small fraction of that. The auto iris does useful work and the black floor is respectable for a bright lamp projector, and nothing about the way that ratio is derived describes what your eyes get during a night scene. Treat it as a technology indicator rather than a performance figure.

The second number is input lag. Epson specs 16.7 ms in the Fast setting, and independent measurement came back at 20.6 ms for 4K and 28 ms for 1080p, with none of the suggested setting changes moving the result. Twenty milliseconds is fine for almost everybody and it is quick by projector standards, and it is also two-thirds of the way to a different claim than the one printed. If you are buying specifically for competitive shooters, look at the Optoma in the comparison below, which is built around that use and does not stop at 60 Hz.

One structural limitation deserves a mention too. Frame interpolation is unavailable with 4K input, and unavailable with 1080p input if 4K Enhancement is switched on, which leaves it usable in a narrow corner of the settings most people will never visit. Anyone who bought a projector hoping to smooth out sports panning should know the feature is essentially decorative here. In exchange, the three-chip design means rainbow flashes are not a risk at all, which for a certain slice of buyers settles the entire argument on its own.

Each rival wins something and I am not burying it. The Optoma puts 8.3 million distinct pixels on the wall against the Epson's 4.1 million, quotes a thousand more lumens, and is the only one of the three that will run 1080p at 240 Hz with a 4.2 ms response, which makes it the obvious choice for a competitive gamer. The BenQ has Android TV in the box, so it works without a streaming stick, and its short 1.13:1 throw end puts 100 inches on the wall from a shade over eight feet, which can settle the argument on its own in a small flat.

Then you add up what happens in a lit room. The Epson is the only one of the three that publishes a colour brightness figure at all, and it matches its white figure, which is the thing that keeps faces looking like faces at four in the afternoon. It has six times the vertical lens shift of the BenQ and infinitely more than the Optoma, which has none. Its zoom range is wider than both. Rainbows cannot happen on it.

The BenQ, meanwhile, quotes 83 ms of input lag, which is four times the Epson's measured figure and rules it out for anything interactive. Take the Optoma if you game competitively or sit close enough to count pixels. Take the BenQ if your room is short and you want apps without a dongle. For watching things in daylight, which is what this article is about, the Epson is the one I would buy.

This projector was built around one problem and it solves that problem more completely than anything near it. What it will not do is pretend to be a dark-room cinema projector.
