Motorola's book-style Razr Fold takes on Samsung with a creaseless display and triple cameras

Motorola has stepped outside its flip-phone comfort zone with the Razr Fold, a book-style foldable that launched in April 2026. The device sports an 8.1-inch inner display and takes direct aim at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 — and it arrives well ahead of Apple's expected foldable, which isn't due until late 2026 or 2027 at the earliest.

The hardware

The Razr Fold's headline claim is a creaseless display — the fold line that plagues almost every book-style phone is, Motorola says, invisible here. That's a bold promise. So far, only Vivo's Find N6 has been independently confirmed creaseless by reviewers; Motorola's claim still needs real-world validation. The panel is framed in 3D glass, and the hinge has been redesigned to be four times stronger than the previous generation. A finger-grip frame makes the phone easier to open one-handed — a small but genuinely useful detail that book foldables often skip.

On cameras, the Razr Fold carries a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 32MP internal selfie camera. Early concept sketches flagged by Android Headlines showed a horizontal camera bar that drew comparisons to the rumored iPhone Ultra design. For context, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 pairs a 5.5-inch cover display with a 7.6-inch inner panel — Motorola's 8.1-inch screen is noticeably larger.

The market angle

Motorola is already Europe's second-largest foldable vendor after Samsung, a position it earned through the affordable Razr 50 flip line, according to Counterpoint Research. The Razr Fold is a different bet — a premium book-style device in a segment Samsung has dominated for years. Foldables remain niche, accounting for just 1.5% of European smartphone sales in Q1 2025, with price being the biggest barrier to wider adoption.

In the US and UK, Samsung leads the book-foldable category with little serious competition. The Razr Fold changes that picture, at least on paper. Pricing hasn't been officially confirmed for the US or UK markets, but reports point to a range of $1,299–$1,799 — putting it squarely against the Z Fold 8.

Apple's foldable, expected in a similarly wide passport-style format, could reshape this segment when it arrives. Until then, the Razr Fold is one of the few credible alternatives to Samsung for buyers who want a full book-style experience without defaulting to the obvious choice.
