Apple's first foldable iPhone has three possible names — and none is confirmed

Apple is set to reveal its first foldable iPhone on September 9, 2026 at Apple Park — and while the hardware is largely an open secret, the name still isn't settled. Three candidates are in circulation, and each carries a different set of expectations for buyers.

The contenders

"iPhone Fold" was the early media shorthand, borrowed from the Samsung playbook. Then Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple internally refers to the device as "iPhone Ultra" — a name that slots neatly into an existing brand ladder alongside Watch Ultra and the M-series Ultra chips, and one that could justify a starting price now estimated at $1,999–$2,299 per PhoneArena.

The newest theory comes from MacRumors, which argues the device will launch as "iPhone Duo." The name has surfaced occasionally on forums and social media without attracting much attention, but MacRumors makes the case it's the most likely final pick.

The Duo argument — and its limits

Apple has used the Duo name before: the PowerBook Duo laptop line ran through the 1990s, and the MagSafe Duo charger launched more recently. Both precedents fit a product built around two screens.

The catch is that "Duo" isn't Apple's alone. Microsoft shipped the Surface Duo, and Intel had Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors. Apple has historically avoided names that echo competitors, which could push the company toward "Ultra" — a term it already owns in consumer hardware.

The hardware

Whatever it's called, the device's specs are fairly well established. It uses a book-style fold with a roughly 5.5-inch outer OLED display and a 7.8-inch inner OLED panel. US pricing estimates have converged around $1,999 to $2,299 — down from earlier projections of $2,399 and closer to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra's territory. Supply is expected to be limited at launch, making early availability tight whether you're buying in the US or the UK.

What to watch

The September 9 event will settle the naming question and confirm pricing, availability, and the full spec sheet. A US release alongside the iPhone 18 Pro on September 18 is possible, though some manufacturing reports point to an October rollout. Until Apple takes the stage, "iPhone Fold," "iPhone Ultra," and "iPhone Duo" are all still in the running.
