Capcom is reviving dormant franchises — but Dino Crisis fans may have to wait

Capcom's samurai action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold 1 million copies on its September 4 launch day, pushing the series past 10 million lifetime units and giving the publisher a firm reason to dig deeper into its back catalog. The company has now officially stated it is "focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently," framing the move as a way to maximize corporate value. For anyone who grew up with forgotten Capcom franchises, that's a meaningful commitment — not just marketing.

Seven names on the list

In its May 2026 investor meeting, Capcom named seven legacy franchises it considers candidates for revival: Mega Man, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Dead Rising, Ace Attorney, Dragon's Dogma, and Okami. Onimusha: Way of the Sword — the first new entry in the series in over 20 years — proves the strategy can work. Gematsu confirmed the day-one figure via Capcom's official investor relations. A separate rumor points to a remake of the original Devil May Cry also being in development, though Capcom hasn't confirmed it.

The Dino Crisis question

The franchise conspicuously absent from Capcom's public roadmap is Dino Crisis — the survival horror series that last released in 2003. It topped Capcom's own fan poll in January 2024, so the demand is documented. According to Gagadget (EN), a French leaker group called Team Biohazard claims a Dino Crisis remake has been in development since 2022, with a possible announcement window of 2028 or 2029. The alleged reason for the slow progress: making dinosaurs genuinely frightening in a modern game is harder than it sounds, and Capcom wants to preserve the horror atmosphere of the 1999 original.

Team Biohazard's track record is mixed and Capcom has not acknowledged the project. The fact that Dino Crisis was absent from the May 2026 investor meeting — despite winning the fan poll — suggests either deliberate secrecy or a lower priority than the rumor mill implies. For now, the seven named franchises are the ones to watch.
