Arm's new mobile GPU puts DLSS-style graphics on Android for the first time

Arm has announced CSS for Mobile 2, a new chip platform that brings AI-powered graphics rendering to Android smartphones for the first time. The platform pairs a new C2 CPU cluster with the Mali G2-Ultra NX — the first GPU in Arm's lineup designed from the ground up around AI. The catch: the only device shipping with it right now is the Xiaomi 18 Fold, sold exclusively in mainland China.

What's actually new

The C2 CPU cluster uses SME2 (Scalable Matrix Extension 2) to push AI workloads harder than before. Single-thread performance improves by 15%, multi-thread by 12%, and overall AI performance jumps 1.7x over the previous generation, per the Arm official announcement. That headroom matters most for running large language models directly on-device — no cloud connection required.

The Mali G2-Ultra NX is the bigger story. Each shader core now has dedicated neural accelerators, enabling three graphics techniques that desktop PC owners will recognize from Nvidia's DLSS:

- Neural Super Sampling (NSS): upscales a 540p image to 1080p without a visible drop in sharpness. - Neural Frame Rate Upscaling (NFRU): doubles frame rates, turning a 30fps game into a smoother 60fps experience. - Neural Super Sampling and Denoising (NSSD): combines upscaling with ray-tracing reconstruction for more realistic lighting in games.

Arm claims up to 4x more frames per second and 4x better power efficiency compared to native rendering at the same battery budget. Those numbers come from Arm's own benchmarks and an early demo called Neural Dawn, so real-world results will depend on how well individual games are optimized.

When will it reach Western phones?

That's the open question. The Xiaomi 18 Fold runs a custom Xring O3 chip that incorporates CSS for Mobile 2, but Samsung, Google, and Apple have not committed to the platform, according to TBreak. Qualcomm and MediaTek — which supply the silicon inside most US and UK Android flagships — have not announced CSS for Mobile 2 products either.

On the gaming side, studios including Sumo Digital, Tencent, and NetEase have signed on, but integration with Unreal Engine and Unity — the two engines most Western developers use — has no confirmed timeline yet.

One reassuring detail for anyone wary of AI overreach: Arm says its neural graphics use deterministic algorithms, not generative models. That keeps the processing fully on-device and sidesteps the IP concerns around training data that have dogged tools like DLSS 5.

The outlook

CSS for Mobile 2 is a platform license sold to chipmakers, not a consumer product with a price tag or release date. Until Qualcomm, MediaTek, or another major supplier ships a chip based on it, Western buyers won't see the benefits. The technology is real and the performance claims are credible — getting it into a phone you can actually buy outside China is the next hurdle.
