A Space Marine's vox antenna is roughly as thick as the lead in a mechanical pencil. So is the tip of a power sword, the tassel hanging off a purity seal and the barrel of a Vindicare's rifle. Resin copes with that scale without complaint. The trouble starts in the half second after each layer hardens, when a conventional printer hauls the whole model straight up off the film at the bottom of the vat, and it repeats that tug hundreds of times per miniature.
The ELEGOO Saturn 4 Ultra 16K gets talked about for its 16K screen and its 14 by 19 micron pixels. I would buy it for a 40K army for a duller reason. Its vat tilts, so every layer peels away from one edge in a gradual sweep, and the resin sits in a heated tank that keeps it runny when the hobby room is cold. The pixels make a display piece prettier. The tilt and the heater decide whether a ten-model squad comes off the plate with every antenna still attached.
If you’re in a hurry: want the straight answer? For a Warhammer 40K army, this is the resin printer I’d spend my own money on. And the 16K screen had surprisingly little to do with it. What won me over is the vat. It tilts to peel each layer off, which is far kinder to antennae, sword tips and banner poles than a machine that rips everything straight up. Is 16K nice to have? Sure. On a painted Intercessor at arm’s length, though, I’d bet you couldn’t pick it out.
Everything else is pretty solid, if you ask me. There’s a heater right in the tank. ELEGOO says 30°C, and one reviewer working in a studio that hovered around freezing saw it hold about 25, which still did the job. Levelling happens on its own, the camera has its own little light, the lid swings up on a hinge and there’s Wi-Fi. The plate is 211.68 by 118.37 mm, so a full squad plus a character goes on in one go. Height tops out at 220 mm, fine for most kits once you split the big stuff.
Who’s it for? Anyone cranking out whole armies, especially in a garage, shed or spare room where the temperature wanders. Where would I hold off? If you want tall one-piece prints or a built-in fume filter, Phrozen’s Mighty Revo 16K has both, and I wouldn’t argue with you. Mostly big terrain? Anycubic’s M7 Pro gives you more plate. I’ll be blunt about one last thing: whatever you buy, sort out ventilation before the first bottle comes open. None of these machines smell nice.

Circle the release method, the tank heater and the plate dimensions if you print armies. Read the speed ceiling and the heater temperature with some caution, since ELEGOO itself calls the first theoretical and the second came in a few degrees lower in one cold-room test. Both get picked apart further down.
Why the Tilting Vat Matters More Than 16K
Here is what happens underneath the model. Light cures a thin slice of resin against a stretched film, and that slice bonds to the model above it and, for a moment, to the film below. A conventional printer then lifts the build plate straight up, and the film clings until it finally lets go, like a rubber sucker pulled square off a window. On a 40K infantry model hanging upside down from a forest of supports, that tug runs through every support tip and every thin part that starts life as a floating island. On a Space Marine that means the antenna, the purity seal ribbons and the loose corner of a cloak.
Every desktop LCD printer descends from stereolithography, and for years the separation step barely changed. The Saturn tips the vat. Separation begins at one edge and travels across the layer, closer to peeling tape than to prying off a lid, and ELEGOO sells the design on lower release force and speed, quoting 5.5 seconds per layer in fast mode with default CHITUBOX settings. The film is PFA, and ELEGOO's own FAQ advises against fitting ACF film on this machine, because ACF only helps printers that pull straight up.
Every miniature spends a moment of each layer hanging from its thinnest support. Pixel size decides how crisp the rivets look. The release decides whether the arm holding the chainsword is still there when the lid opens.
Two findings from other testers back this up. Cameron Coward at Hackster, seven years into resin printing, found he could get away with fewer and lighter supports with smaller contact points on this printer, and the parts came off with less visible scarring. On the 12K sibling, which uses the same tilting vat, Maker Hacks timed each layer release at a couple of seconds against seven or more on earlier printers. For an army painter, the smaller support marks are the payoff that shows, since every nub left on a greave or a shoulder pad is one more thing to sand before priming.
Large flat cross-sections gain the most. A vehicle hull panel, a scenic base printed flat or a slab of ruined wall creates the heaviest suction on a pull-up machine, and those are the layers where peeling beats pulling by the widest margin. None of this rescues a badly supported model, and I would sooner say so here than have you find out at two in the morning. What the tilt buys you is margin, on the nights when your support placement is a little optimistic.
Heat, Sensors and a Printer That Checks Itself
Resin is fussy about temperature. Phrozen, which sells a rival heater, says cure speed falls by 30 to 60 percent for every 10°C drop, and anyone who has printed in a February garage knows the symptoms: soft layers, bases that let go, a vat full of cold syrup. The Saturn warms the resin inside the tank, shows the live temperature on its screen and holds the first exposure until the target is reached. You can schedule the preheat up to 24 hours ahead. In a normal room the wait is short, and Hackster reported only a few minutes of heating before each print.
Setup is the other half of the pitch. On first boot the printer runs a self-test covering the LCD, the LED array, the tank, both motors, the camera, the fans and its sensors, then levels itself with a mechanical sensor. Dual-band Wi-Fi handles file transfer at the 6 to 10 Mbps ELEGOO quotes, and several machines can be grouped for cluster printing. I like the build plate's lever clamp and winged handles more than a spec sheet would suggest, because fiddling with a knob in resin-coated gloves gets old fast.
What the Saturn keeps an eye on while you get on with basing the last batch:

ELEGOO is candid that camera detection varies with lighting, model and resin, and its FAQ routes the camera features through CHITUBOX 2.0. At launch, 3DWithUs found that SatelLite, ELEGOO's in-house slicer, had not yet switched on live monitoring. Think of the camera as a smoke alarm for an overnight run. It catches the obvious disasters, such as a plate that comes up empty, and leaves the subtle ones to you.

Squads and characters come out best, which is handy, because that is most of an army and nearly all of its fragile bits. Its limits show up at the edges of the hobby: very tall single pieces, which the 220 mm Z axis forces you to split, and fumes, which it does nothing about. Neither should put a 40K player off, and both are worth planning for before the box arrives.
Film, Fumes and the Cost of Keeping It Running
What ships with it. Printer, build plate, resin tank, funnel, drip tray, USB drive, gloves, mask, spare screws, scraper, the 24V 6A power adapter, a tool kit and the manual. Resin only comes with certain bundles, and there is no wash station, no curing light and no spare film. Order a pack of Saturn-sized PFA film with the printer, since a torn sheet mid-army is a bad reason to stop for a week.
Wear parts and warranty. The printer counts releases and asks for a new film after 60,000 of them, and you reset the counter from the self-test page after swapping it. ELEGOO's US policy covers the machine for 12 months, the tank and build plate for 6, the LCD for 3, and the release film not at all. That short screen cover is the line worth remembering. The 9H glass protector helps, and filtering the resin back into the bottle after each session is the cheapest habit for keeping stray cured flakes away from the most fragile part of the printer.
Air, and the shopping list. There is no carbon filter inside, so the room needs airflow. ELEGOO's Mars Mate purifier hooks up through a hose, and ELEGOO claims it removes up to 95 percent of volatile organic compounds. A wash and cure station belongs at the top of the list, and water-washable resin is worth a try if you would sooner not keep litres of isopropyl alcohol in a spare room. Budget for a respirator with organic vapour cartridges as well, because the disposable masks tucked into printer boxes are made for dust.
Where the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K Falls Short
The tilting design has a price, and you pay it in housekeeping. TechRadar found on the 12K sibling, which shares this chassis, that a tilting tank punishes overfilling and a sloping bench, and the legs are fixed, so a slightly warped surface needs shimming. Maker Hacks noticed a gap on that 12K model between the plate and its upper frame where resin collects. None of it is serious. All of it means a little more wiping and a spirit level on day one.
Then there is the 16K itself. Goonhammer's reviewer ran the optics and worked out that you would need your eye about 69 mm from a model to notice a 20 micron step, and about 17 mm away to tell the 16K panel from the 12K version's 19 by 24 micron pixels. On a finished squad across the gaming table the difference is invisible, a point Resin & Rolls made bluntly in its own review. The finer screen pays off on busts, display characters and anything you plan to photograph up close.
The heater and the speed rating both come with footnotes. The heater target is 30°C, and 3DWithUs, whose studio sat between minus 3 and 4°C, saw the vat settle at around 25°C. That was still enough for clean prints, which suggests the 30°C figure assumes a warmer room than theirs. The 150 mm/h speed is labelled theoretical by ELEGOO, and the release time is preset in firmware and cannot be changed, so anyone who likes tuning lift speeds for an awkward resin has one dial fewer to turn.
A couple of things no amount of care will change. There is no fume filtration inside the case, a gap Goonhammer, GamesRadar+, 3DWithUs and Hackster all flagged. And the build envelope is a touch smaller than the 12K Saturn 4 Ultra's, at 211.68 by 118.37 mm against 218.88 by 122.88, with a 220 mm height that sits under both rivals in the comparison that follows. Neither matters for infantry. Both matter if your army includes a Knight.

The Phrozen uses the same 16K pixel grid and the same plate footprint, which makes it the cleanest head-to-head available. The Anycubic is the 14K machine most often cross-shopped with the Saturn, with a bigger plate and more automation. All numbers are the makers' own. Peak speed stays out of the table because each brand tests it with different resins and layer heights, and the heater row shows the temperature each company targets:

Credit where it is due, because the rivals score some proper points. The Phrozen gives you 15 mm more height, the only built-in air purifier of the three, an Ethernet port and a larger control screen, and Phrozen sells a 16K upgrade kit for owners of the earlier Mighty Revo, which says something about how long the platform is meant to last. The Anycubic has the biggest plate at 223 by 126 mm, the lightest chassis at 12.8 kg and automatic resin refill and withdrawal, and Anycubic quotes 170 mm/h with its own high-speed resin at 0.1 mm layers, or 130 mm/h with standard resin.
The Saturn answers with the one feature the other two lack entirely, the tilting vat, plus pixels that match the Phrozen and beat the Anycubic's 16.8 by 24.8 microns. It warms the resin in the tank directly, where the Phrozen heats the air around it and the Anycubic aims five degrees lower. Levelling is fully automatic, the camera comes with a built-in light where the Anycubic has no camera at all, and it takes up less desk than the Phrozen while weighing nearly two kilos less.
For a Warhammer collection the gap is smaller than the brochures suggest, and it runs in the Saturn's favour on the one thing the models themselves feel, the pull at the end of every layer. The Phrozen is the closest call. Someone printing tall display pieces in a small flat, where the purifier and the extra 15 mm both count for a lot, could reasonably land there. For squads, characters and the odd tank in sections, the ELEGOO gets my vote.

Most of that list gets fixed with a spare part or a settings change. A new drip tray costs little, a loose ribbon cable takes five minutes to reseat, and there is more than one slicer to try. Adhesion trouble, which GamesRadar+ ran into on early prints, usually comes down to exposure, and the built-in resin calibration print is there for exactly that job. Fumes are different. The machine will never filter its own air, so the ventilation plan has to exist before the first print does.
Should a 40K Player Buy the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K?
Warhammer models are small, spiky and expensive in time, and the printer that suits them best is the one that stresses them least while they are being made. The Saturn 4 Ultra 16K does that better than its two closest rivals because its vat tilts, and it backs the tilt with a heater in the resin, automatic levelling and a camera that catches the worst overnight failures. The pixel count is a bonus you will see on a bust and rarely on the tabletop.
It still asks things of you. Ventilation is your job, tall single-piece kits need splitting, and a bubble level plus a spare pack of film belong on the first order. Accept those and it is the machine I would trust with an entire army, one squad per plate, through a cold winter in the garage. Get the bench level and the window open, and the first plate of Intercessors will do the persuading for me.
