Ford Recalls 223,000 F-150s Because the Fuel Tank Can Fall Off
Ford is recalling 223,472 F-150 pickups in the US after discovering that fuel tanks on certain trucks may not be properly secured. The affected vehicles span the 2023 through 2027 model years, and the fix will be free at any Ford dealership. Owner notification letters go out September 21, 2026.
The defect
The root cause is surprisingly simple: assembly-line cameras that were supposed to monitor fuel tank strap installation failed to do their job, meaning some tanks left the factory without being correctly fastened. In the worst case, a strap gives way while the truck is moving, and the tank separates from the vehicle entirely. Even short of that, a loose tank can leak fuel — which raises the risk of an engine stall or, in a more serious scenario, a fire. Ford has logged 16 warranty claims related to the issue worldwide; no crashes have been reported so far.
A pattern, not a one-off
This recall — registered by NHTSA as 26V578000 — is the third separate F-150 recall Ford has issued in a single week, per Autoblog. That context matters. Ford has already issued 56 recalls covering 11.27 million vehicles in 2026 alone, according to Motor1. In 2025 the company set an all-time record with 153 recalls — breaking GM's previous record of 77 set in 2014. Roughly 27% of those 2025 recalls were re-recalls: vehicles that had already been through a repair that didn't hold.
NHTSA fined Ford $165 million in November 2024 for recall compliance failures and placed the company under a consent order requiring third-party oversight. Ford responded with a publicized quality push, including a program it described as "testing vehicles to failure." The defect count has climbed since.
What F-150 owners should do
The F-150 is America's best-selling vehicle — has been for decades — so 223,472 affected units is a meaningful slice of Ford's core business. Dealers will inspect the tank straps and replace any defective ones at no charge.
