The team
Hawley, best known for creating Fargo and most recently directing Alien: Earth on FX, serves as showrunner and director. Rob McElhenney — co-creator and star of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and creator of Apple TV+'s Mythic Quest — co-created the series and takes a lead acting role. Rounding out the principal cast are Lizzy Caplan and Steve Buscemi, per The Hollywood Reporter. Buscemi is no stranger to prestige drama: he won back-to-back Emmy nominations for playing Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire and has appeared in Reservoir Dogs, The Big Lebowski, and — fittingly — Fargo.
The format
The series won't retell any existing Far Cry game storyline. Hawley has been clear that adapting a specific game plot beat-for-beat would miss the point; instead, the show borrows the franchise's spirit — isolated settings, escalating conflict, charismatic antagonists — and builds original stories around them. According to Variety, each season will feature a different setting and a new cast, making it an anthology in the mold of Fargo itself rather than a continuous narrative.
That structure is a smart hedge. Video-game adaptations that hew too closely to their source material risk alienating non-players, while those that stray too far frustrate the existing fanbase. An anthology sidesteps both traps by treating Far Cry as a creative sandbox rather than a script to be filmed.
Where and when
In the US the series will stream on Hulu; internationally it lands on Disney+. No release date has been announced — production only kicked off weeks ago, so a 2027 window seems realistic at the earliest. Hawley is simultaneously managing post-production on Alien: Earth, which may influence the pace, but FX has clearly committed serious talent to this one.
