Samsung Galaxy A18 4G: six years of updates for a phone that costs €100 more than its predecessor

Samsung has launched the Galaxy A18 4G in France and the Nordic markets at around €279–€299 — roughly €100 more than the Galaxy A17 4G debuted at last year. The hardware story is largely unchanged: same camera resolution, same 5,000mAh battery, nearly the same design. The one headline argument for paying more is a six-year software support commitment stretching to 2032.

The mystery chip

The A18 4G swaps out the familiar MediaTek Helio G99 for a Samsung Exynos 1610 — a chip Samsung hasn't officially announced yet. Notebookcheck kernel source analysis confirms the Exynos 1610 is real, with an upgraded ISP that supports 4K/60fps video and modern codecs (HEVC, H.264, VP9). Real-world performance, though, remains untested — buyers of the A18 4G will essentially be the first to find out how it performs day-to-day.

The rest of the spec sheet is budget-standard: a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display at 90Hz and 2340×1080 resolution, a 50MP main camera (no optical stabilisation, Full HD/30fps video cap), a 13MP selfie camera in a teardrop notch, and a 4GB/128GB base configuration. Protection bumps from IP54 to IP64, meaning full dust resistance and better splash protection — a genuine, if modest, improvement over the A17.

The price problem

The A17 4G launched at €200 with 6GB of RAM; the A18 4G starts at €279–€299 with 4GB. GSMArena price comparison shows the A17 has since dropped to around €160 at retail — making the A18 premium look even harder to justify on specs alone. Samsung is essentially betting that the software support story carries the extra cost.

That support pledge is confirmed: six years of OS updates and security patches through 2032, starting with Android 17 and One UI 9 out of the box, per the Samsung Newsroom France. For a budget phone you plan to keep for five or six years, that's a legitimate reason to pay more. For anyone who needs a handset right now, the A17 4G at its current street price is still a harder deal to beat on value.

UK and US availability

Samsung has not confirmed a UK or US launch date for the A18 4G. Based on the A17's pattern, a UK SIM-free price around £169–£170 is plausible, per UK Smartphone Checker leaks, though ongoing RAM supply constraints could push the price higher. A 5G variant with a Snapdragon processor is expected in early 2027 and is the more likely North American option. France goes on sale September 18, 2026.
