$40 million, no crunch, 1 million copies in three days: how Rebel Wolves did it
The Blood of Dawnwalker, the vampire action-RPG from Rebel Wolves, hit one million copies sold within three days of its September 3, 2026 launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox — a striking debut for a first-time studio. What makes the number more remarkable is the budget behind it: just $40 million, a fraction of what most games at this level cost to produce. A Bloomberg (Jason Schreier) deep-dive published this week explains how the studio pulled it off.
The pitch and the money
Rebel Wolves was founded by veterans of CD Projekt RED, including game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who led development on both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Tomaszkiewicz conceived the project in 2022, self-funded an early prototype to attract investors, and by the end of that year had secured a deal with Chinese company NetEase — 26% of the studio in exchange for a $40 million development budget.
The team spent 2023 hiring. Full production didn't begin until late 2023, running for roughly three years. The studio originally planned for 90 people; it grew to 160. Tomaszkiewicz told Schreier that 160 is close to ideal for him — small enough to talk to every developer daily, large enough to ship an ambitious RPG.
The anti-crunch call
The decision that may define Rebel Wolves' reputation came when the studio chose to release in September rather than June. The reason was straightforward: a summer launch would have required crunch. Skipping it didn't, as PC Gamer notes, appear to hurt sales. The studio also credited a smooth production to one specific discipline — they never changed the game's core pillars from the original pitch. No mid-development pivots, no scope creep on the fundamentals.
That's a pointed contrast to burnout patterns documented at studios like Rockstar and Insomniac, where crunch has drawn public criticism for years.
What comes next
Bandai Namco handled publishing and marketing for the game. Rebel Wolves has already signaled that The Blood of Dawnwalker is the first installment of a larger vampire franchise. With a lean team, a locked-in methodology, and a million-unit debut, the studio has the kind of proof-of-concept that makes a sequel easy to greenlight.
For players, the game is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Steam accounted for roughly 300,000–310,000 of those first-week sales, with PS5 showing stronger momentum on the console side.
