Tinder will make identity verification available worldwide by the end of the year

Tinder will make identity verification available to users worldwide, according to an announcement by the company on Monday.

The feature will allow users to verify their identity by uploading a photo of their documents. It will be voluntary, except where mandated by law. As an example of the latter, Japan requires proof that you are 18 or older to register on Tinder. This is done with a document such as a driver's license or passport. ID verification on Tinder was introduced there back in 2019.

Tinder will start testing the feature in other major markets before the end of this year. Head of trust and security products Rory Kozoll said in a press release that the company will be testing and learning as identity verification is a complex and delicate process.

Tinder is still evaluating technology providers, so it's impossible to say exactly what the feature will look like, but it might be similar to photo verification on Tinder. The app uses facial recognition to match in-app selfies with your profile photos, allowing other users to know your photos are authentic (and, in turn, you know the same about other verified users).

Verification is a feature that's been long requested, Tinder says. The app's authors hope that ID verification, like photo verification, will make users more accountable.
