WhatsApp expands 'disappearing messages' options - as much as 90 days

The development of disappearing messages is an ongoing process in WhatsApp. It has long been possible to set messages to self-destruct after a week, and it's also possible to make media files disappear after they've been viewed once by recipients.

But now new features are on the way. Beta versions of WhatsApp earlier this year saw signs of work on the ability to delete messages after a day, and now another option appears to be in development.

Source has revealed a new option in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android. In addition to the 24-hour option that has been tested for months, there is now a 90-day auto-delete setting.

While the new setting is not yet functional - even in the beta version of the app - WhatsApp is clearly preparing to give users the option to delete messages they've sent after three months.

And gg editorial warns that while all the potential deadlines for automatically deleting messages are useful for sending sensitive or time-sensitive information, there's nothing stopping a recipient from saving a disappearing message by taking a screenshot of it.
