Sony's new PS5 is lighter and (almost) screwdriver-free
Sony has quietly launched a new revision of the PS5 in Australia. A source reports that the revamped PS5 models include a new base stand screw that no longer requires a screwdriver. Sony has reportedly replaced the screw with a new one with a plastic grip around the top so it can be easily adjusted by hand.
Source also reports that the updated PS5 models are about 300 grams lighter than the original, but it's unclear exactly what Sony has removed or changed to reduce the weight. The new PS5s come with the model number CFI-1102A, instead of the CFI-1000 used in the original.
Australia appears to be the first country to have these slightly modified PS5 models. While Sony has eliminated the need for a screwdriver for the recommended stand, it will still be needed to access the optional removable M.2 SSD.
Sony plans to introduce support for removable SSDs in an upcoming software update. The update, which is currently available for beta testers, also includes improvements to the PS5 user interface, 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers, and an improved way to differentiate between PS4 and PS5 game versions.
