It's unknown how many people are using Microsoft Office on Chromebook, but if that's you, you're in for a decline. Microsoft will soon discontinue its Office app for Android on Chrome OS, the company has confirmed.

The app will leave the Google Play store on September 18, after which users will have to log in via Office.com or Outlook.com. As the source notes, the Office app will still be available on Android phones even when it disappears from Chrome OS.

While logging in through the web app may work in most cases, it is clearly inferior in terms of user experience to what the Android app has offered so far. In particular, you have to keep in mind that the web app offers almost no offline access to data, something users enjoyed in the Google Play Store version.

It's unclear why Microsoft is making these changes, except that the company has described the move as "an attempt to provide the most optimized experience for Chrome OS/Chromebook users." Whatever the intent, it will likely give Chromebook users another reason to try G Suite if they haven't already.
