Chinese children banned from playing online games for more than three hours a week

On August 30, 2021, new restrictions that apply to minors and online gaming went into effect in China.

What happened?

Bloomberg, citing Xinhua, China's news agency, reports that since August 30, children in China have been banned from spending more than three hours a week playing online games. The restrictions are linked to growing concerns about gaming addiction.

Children are only allowed to play for an hour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Young gamers can spend an extra hour playing their favorite game on holidays.

Large platforms like Tencent are required to implement relevant restrictions and integrate a user identification system to ensure compliance with the new rules.

The People's Republic of China has set similar limits before. Previous limits included the ability to play for three hours on holidays and weekends, and an hour and a half on weekdays.
