Instagram will start forcing users to enter their date of birth in their account settings if they haven't already done so.

The company announced that a notification will now appear asking for your date of birth to "personalize your experience." But this notification can only be rejected a few times, after which it will become mandatory.

The move is part of Instagram's broader strategy to create new security features aimed at young users, the company explains. The strategy includes teen privacy protections introduced earlier this year, as well as Instagram's long-term plan to launch a version of its service aimed at users under the age of 13.

The company will also now ask users to enter their date of birth on "stub screens." These "stub screens," which hide content flagged as sensitive or graphic, aren't new. But Instagram has never before asked for a user's date of birth before showing hidden content.
