 Your smartphone may not lose its relevance not only in the first few years, but for the whole 7 years! At at least, that's the initiative Germany has taken .

What does it mean?

The German government insists that the European Union require gadget manufacturers to extend support for their models. The country's authorities want to oblige companies to send security updates within 7 years and provide service centers with spare parts. This means that your smartphone will not be susceptible to hacker attacks, and you will be able to repair it at any time, without facing lack of parts for an outdated model.

By the way, even the EU  isn't currently asking that much. The commission's recent proposal is limited to 5 years. The EU proposal, which could go into effect by 2023, is designed to help the environment by allowing phones to be stored longer. In fact, the 7-year term would give phones a support cycle more similar to computers.

Unsurprisingly, this initiative has prompted resistance from DigitalEurope, whose members include Apple, Google and Samsung. It is demanding that the support period be reduced to 3 years and limit replacement parts to screens and batteries, and not cameras, speakers and other components that are supposedly more reliable.

Recall that Apple typically provides 5 years of regular feature and security updates, but but the manufacturers of Android devices promise 3 years or even less.
