After more than a year of litigation, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has finally reached a verdict in Apple's case against Epic Games.

While Apple will be forced to change some App Store rules, Epic Games was ordered to pay Apple 30% commission on all sales the company registered bypassing the App Store's in-app purchase system for the game Fortnite last year. Epic has now complied with the judge's order and paid Apple $6 million.

The fact of payment was confirmed by the CEO of Epic Games Tim Sweeney in his Twitter account, who joked about paying the fine with Apple Pay.

backstory

In 2020, Epic Games released a Fortnite update for iOS that introduced its own in-game content payment system. The company advertised the new system as a cheaper way to purchase in-game items, as its own system did not require an App Store fee.

Judge Rogers ordered Epic to pay Apple 30% of the revenue earned by bypassing the App Store's in-game purchase system at the time.

Meanwhile, while Apple was also ordered to allow developers to offer in-app content through third-party payment services, the company was not ordered to return the Fortnite game and Epic to the App Store. Of course, Epic Games plans to challenge the judge's decision.
