Study: Samsung Galaxy Watch could help users with Parkinson's disease
A study published in the leading medical journal Frontiers in Neurology found that the blood pressure measurement feature in the Samsung Galaxy Watch smartwatch helps people with Parkinson's disease.
How does it work?
Recall, Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 4 models are equipped with comprehensive sensors that monitor blood pressure by analyzing the pulse wave by heart rate monitoring sensors. You can keep track of your readings in the Samsung Health Monitor app.
As a result, the watch can help patients with Parkinson's disease effectively manage orthostatic hypotension. This is a condition in which blood pressure decreases dramatically when the body position changes from sitting or lying down to standing. And it is quite common among people with Parkinson's disease and can lead to falls and injuries. And frequent blood pressure measurements can help identify critical fluctuations in this index for diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's disease.
Studies have shown that the blood pressure data obtained with the Galaxy Watch and sphygmomanometer were comparable. The test was performed on 56 patients with average age of 66.9 years with reference sphygmomanometer on one arm and Galaxy Watch 3 on the other. Each patient's BP was measured with both devices three times.
