Facebook, which owns photo service Instagram, today announced plans to suspend the planned launch of an Instagram Kids version for young users to give itself time to build new parental controls tools.

In a press release, written by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, Facebook states that it is better to give kids access to the special version of Instagram than the regular version. He also added that the project is on hold to allow developers to do more work with parents.

The post goes on to say that Facebook's move could be perceived as an admission that the idea was initially bad. Mosseri argues that this is not the case, even though people are concerned about the impact Instagram may have on children.

Parents can check out the full statement to see what Facebook's stance has been to date. Apparently, the company really wants to promote a version of Instagram specifically designed for kids, but it's not ready to do so yet.
