At the moment, the 5-nanometer process technology is the most advanced in foundry manufacturing, which the chipmakers have mastered. Next year, the transition to the rails of 4-nanometer technology is promised, and the first chips using it should be Dimensity 2000 and Snapdragon 898. And MediaTek's product could become the leader in this race.

The next step is the 3-nanometer technology process. Samsung introduced the 3GAE (3nm Gate-All-Around Early) and 3GAP (3nm Gate-All-Around Plus) nodes a couple of years ago, promising significant power savings and improved overall performance. Introducing the technology in 2019, the company said that the 3nm process will be able to offer a 35% increase in performance with a 50% reduction in power consumption compared to the 7LPP process.

It was expected that the trial production could start from one day to the next, but it has now been revealed that Samsung is delaying it until 2022. The company also plans to release 2nm chips, but not before 2025. Interestingly, TSMC previously announced that mass production of 3nm processors will not begin until 2023. It is planned to release 4nm chip for iPhone in 2022.

The postponement of the implementation of the new technological process is due to the fact that chip makers have a more important task - to cope with the shortage of chips. The priorities are to meet the demand for processors rather than rushing to introduce new technology.
