Apple to postpone App Store rule changes pending Epic Games appeal

Apple has filed a notice of appeal in the Epic Games case asking for a stay of the court order that allows developers to use other payment systems.

Back in September, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers finally announced her decision in Apple's case against Epic Games. Judge Rogers ruled that Apple can no longer ban developers from redirecting users to third-party payment systems, but Apple is now appealing the ruling, which could delay such changes for years.

On Friday, the company filed a notice of appeal in the Epic Games case asking for a stay of the injunction that would allow developers to add third-party app payment systems. If Apple's request is granted, changes to the App Store payment system may not go into effect until after the case is over, which could take years.

The appeal will be heard by a judge in November, and the injunction ordering Apple to lift any restrictions on developers' in-app purchase system was due to take effect on December 9, 2021.

Currently, developers must pay Apple between 15% and 30% commissions for each sale made through the App Store system. Epic Games sued Apple after it attempted to bypass the App Store's app purchase system, which resulted in the popular game Fortnite being removed from all Apple platforms.
