EU disagrees with Apple that USB-C transition hurts innovation

The European Union continues to do everything it can to force electronics manufacturers to switch to a single charging connector, which is USB-C. But this does not suit everyone. Apple is not eager to give up Lightning, and claims that adopting USB-C as a standard would harm innovation. The EU does not agree with this statement.

What we know

Switching to USB-C is unlikely to be a problem for Android device makers. Now even budget smartphones are equipped with a symmetrical connector. Apple, on the other hand, uses USB-C in most tablets, while all iPhones have Lightning.

Company from California has already managed to criticize the EU initiative. Back in 2007 Apple claimed that adopting a common standard would hurt innovation. Now it has reminded of its own statement from 14 years ago.

However, Anna Cavazzini, President of the European Parliament, says the fears of the American company are groundless. According to her, the adoption of a single port standard leaves room for the adoption of a new standard in the future and provides an opportunity for technological development.

It's not entirely clear why Apple opposes the move to USB-C. It seems at least odd given that USB-C is installed in all current MacBook laptops and most iPad tablets. Aside from smartphones, Lightning remains in the cheapest iPad and iPad Touch.
