Images of the 42 largest asteroids found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter have surfaced on the European Southern Observatory website.
To observe the asteroid belt, astronomers used Very Large Telescopeinstalled in Chile on Mount Cerro Paranal at an altitude of more than 2.6 km. It is a complex of 8.2-metre and 1.8-metre optical telescopes.
Asteroids vary in shape and size. The largest are called Ceres and Vesta. Their diameters are 940 km and 520 km respectively, while the smallest are Urania and Ausonia measuring about 90 km.
