Google created Pragati OS for "the world's cheapest 4G smartphone" JioPhone Next

Back at the beginning of summer Indian company Jio Platforms announced a smartphone JioPhone Next, developed in cooperation with  Google. It was expected that it will appear on sale in September, but due to chip shortage the launch had to be postponed to November. Meanwhile, the manufacturer showed a new promotional video and revealed some characteristics "the cheapest 4G smartphone in the world " (as the company itself calls it).

As it turns out, the gadget doesn't run at all Android Go Edition, a simplified version of the operating system for budget devices. Jio and Google worked together to create Pragati OS - custom Android for the Indian market with many special features. For example, with real-time translator, voice-over text etc. A full package of Jio apps are also promised.

It is also confirmed that JioPhone Next will use a chipset from Snapdragon, but which one - is not specified. According to rumors, it is Snapdragon 215. In addition, the device is credited with a display with resolution of 720×1440 pixels, 2 GB RAM, a 13 MP camera on back and 8 MP front-facing camera.

The phone will be manufactured in India at two factories. Production will be handled by partner Neolync, which has received an investment from Jio of 200 million Indian rupees ($2.7 million) and 33.5 billion Indian rupees ($445 million) under a incentive program spread over 4.5 years.
