Replacing the display in iPhone 13 at an unofficial service is almost impossible without losing functionality

In recent weeks, the so-called "right to repair" has been actively discussed in the United States, or, more precisely, that many companies are depriving users of it. The company iFixit also spoke in support. It criticized Apple.

What is known

The giant from Cupertino was hit by iFixit for the inability to replace the display itself or repair at an unofficial service center. Whereas replacing a display on an Apple smartphone required a pair of screwdrivers and a pick, now you need a microscope, microsoldering tools and access to Apple's Independent Repair Provider Program.

Apple is against the use of non-genuine iPhone parts. For this reason, installing Chinese components deprives the user of some smartphone's features. However, in the case of iPhone 13 even using the original display does not save from the loss of Face ID during repair at home or in unauthorized service centers.

This is due to the fact that Apple has added a special controller to new generation smartphones, which acts as an intermediary between the motherboard and the display. It is possible to register the chip with the help of Apple Services Toolkit 2 software, but it is not available to ordinary users, nor to employees of third-party service centers.

The problem can be solved by mounting the old microcontroller to the new display. But this procedure requires a high level of skill and expensive equipment.

Representatives of unauthorized service centers claim that Apple intentionally took such a step to force the iPhone 13 owners to use only official repair services in case of failure.

Recall that last year iPhone 12 owners faced a similar problem. Back then Apple did not allow independent camera replacement. But this restriction disappeared after one of the software updates.
