Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has founded a new drug discovery and development subsidiary. Isomorphic Labs will use the research of DeepMind, a London-based artificial intelligence laboratory also owned and operated by Alphabet.

Details related to Isomorphic Labs are quite scarce at the moment. However, this is not Alphabet's first move into the medical field. Divisions of the company are already exploring various aspects of human health. Among them is Verily, which is working on projects ranging from surgical robots to contact lenses that control glucose levels in diabetics. Another project, Calico, has an ambitious goal to overcome aging.

Isomorphic Labs will focus exclusively on drug discovery and new technologies that can help develop drugs. The newly formed company said its goal is to "redefine" the process of developing new drugs through an artificial intelligence approach.

A recent study found that it costs an average of $1.3 billion to create a new pharmaceutical drug. Most of this amount is related to the development process itself.
