Iraqi prime minister attacked by drone
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qadimi claims he survived a drone assassination attempt at his home in Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone yesterday (7 November 2021).
The country's Interior Ministry said three drones were involved in the attack, one of which carried a bomb. Six bodyguards were injured in the incident. One official told Reuters that security forces found remnants of a small drone at the site of the attack.
While the Iraqi government has publicly said it is too early to identify the perpetrators, CBS sources suspect they belong to pro-Iranian forces that have used similar tactics against Erbil International Airport and the U.S. Embassy.
Drone terrorism is not a new idea. Flying drones have long been recognized by various groups as a means of delivering "payloads" such as explosives to targeted areas. Attacks on political leaders, however, are a new phenomenon.
