Apple will allow screen replacements at home and unofficial service centers

Last week the iFixit website published a story saying that Apple has added a special chip to the iPhone 13 that makes it impossible to replace the screen at home or at third-party repair shops without losing Face ID. But, as it turns out, the company does plan to allow display replacement at unauthorized repair shops.

Recall that the new chip acts as an intermediary between the motherboard and the screen. The chip requires special software which is not available either at any third-party service centers or for ordinary users. And without it the 3D Face ID facial recognition system does not work. Transferring the chip to the new display is a complicated matter and requires expensive equipment.

We mentioned the situation with iPhone 12, when while replacing the camera the system produced a notification. It disappeared after software update. Apple will follow the same path this time as well. In iOS 15.2 the company will remove the restriction, and after replacing the screen in an unauthorized service center the Face ID system will not be disrupted. But there is no information about the release date of the operating system update yet.
