No PS5 under the Christmas tree: Sony makes fewer and fewer consoles due to component shortages

Sony is struggling with production of PlayStation 5 consoles and has lowered its production forecast for the current fiscal year. While the company was expecting to build 16 million units between April 2021 and March 2022, the figure is now around 15 million.

Sony has publicly predicted that 14.8 million PS5 consoles will be sold this fiscal year, so while this isn't a significant downward revision, it does show just how limited shipments will be for the foreseeable future. A figure of 16 million units would allow Sony to meet that target and secure additional inventory for next year.

Sony predicts 22.6 million PS5 sales in the fiscal year beginning April 2022, but its manufacturing partners reportedly believe reaching that goal will be difficult. In other words, don't expect it to get any easier to buy a PS5 anytime soon. Rather, the opposite is the case.
