A Very Large Telescope in the Atacama Desert has helped scientists at the European Southern Observatory detect a young black hole in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

The object is located in the NGC 1850 cluster, which in turn is about 160,000 light years away. The discovered black hole is eleven times the size of the Sun.

Scientists used a dynamic method to find it. It involves recording the effect a black hole has on nearby stars.

Astronomers used to find such black holes in other galaxies by detecting the x-ray emission or gravitational waves produced by black holes that collide with each other or with neutron stars. But usually a dynamical method is used to search. It is believed that in the future it will help scientists learn more about the origin of young black holes.
