The Cornwall Council in the UK has made the decision to "lend" laptops and tablets to the homeless and anyone else who does not have access to the Internet.

The initiative, run by the homeless charity St Petrocs, aims to help those who are unable to connect to the Internet - something that "many of us take for granted," the Cornwall Council says. The charitable organization is committed to providing the devices as well as teaching how to use them.

According to the city council, this measure will allow the homeless and those in need "to gain access to jobs and medical services." It states that about 13% of residents of Cornwall and the region have never used the Internet - as of 2019, a quarter of adults lack basic digital skills. Many "do not have access to the kind of connectivity that many of us take for granted."

"As education, healthcare and other services move more and more online, it is vital that homeless people are not left out," said a council spokesman. In addition to St Petrocs, in program mOther organizations may also be involved. In any case, according to the initiators, it is extremely important to monitor the impact of the new program.
