IP will be calculated: Australian law will force IT giants to disclose personal data of Internet trolls

Social media should disclose the identities of anonymous online trolls and those who defame and insult users. This is the essence of the new bill proposed by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Australians facing defamatory information on social media will be able to take legal action. If the fact of moral harm is confirmed, then such tech giants as Twitter and Meta (formerly Facebook) will be obliged by a court order to disclose the identity of the authors of such messages, as well as other users responsible for such messages. There is also a penalty for persons who pay for the publication of such materials.

Under current law, social networks are not considered to be publishers of content published on their platforms. This means that they are not responsible for the publication of such messages. Today, if a user posts defamatory comments on a Facebook page, legal responsibility lies with the owner of that page.
