During their investigation, Bloomberg reporters found that in 2012, the Chinese government used Huawei in a cyberattack on Australia's telecommunications network.

What is known

Former United States security officials told Bloomberg reporters that Chinese intelligence officials had infiltrated the ranks of Huawei employees who served Australia's largest telecommunications company. They added malicious code to the software, which after the update got on Huawei equipment.

As a result, the software began to record all communications and transmitted data to the Middle Kingdom. After a while, the malicious software self-destructed. Almost all evidence of his presence was also removed.

The intelligence exchange was confirmed by nearly two dozen former national security officers who in 2012-2019. received information on this matter from agencies in Australia and the United States. The incident confirmed the fears of both countries that China was using Huawei equipment as a channel for espionage.
