A source in Taiwan's supply chain says Qualcomm considers MediaTek's Dimensity 9000 chip to be a major threat, so it has accelerated development of the new processor.

But will it be that new? It is reported that Samsung will be engaged in the production of the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 until May or June 2022, after which it will completely pass into the hands of TSMC. And so that there is no confusion about which chip manufacturer produced this or that chip, the naming will also be different. Network sources predict the processor will be named Snapdragon 8 Gen2 or even Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+.

What exactly will be the difference between the two chip models is not yet clear. But TSMC's production will be larger than that of Samsung, and this may be due to the fact that 4-nanometer TSMC technology is more mature and provides improved energy efficiency. As a result, Qualcomm is expected to become TSMC's second largest customer in 2022 after Apple.

Thus, Snapdragon 8 Gen2 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ can be announced in May, and the first smartphones with a new processor will go on sale in a few months. Although Qualcomm usually releases chips with a "+" in the name in July and August.
