Electric car manufacturer Xpeng has announced it has received approval to roll out assisted driving technology to users in the capital Beijing.

Here's What We Know

Initially, the technology will be allowed to be used on "ring roads" that run in concentric circles around the city centre. It will also be possible to use the assistant on "major highways".

It is not yet known when the driver assistance technology will be allowed to be used on all streets in Beijing.

According to the company, a system called XNGP, available to drivers of certain models for a fee, facilitates driving with software that helps them brake smoothly at traffic lights, turn at intersections and perform other tasks.

Xpeng plans to launch the service in other Chinese cities later this year.

Flashback

Xpeng is the only company in China to offer driver assistance technology similar to Tesla. However, the US manufacturer's Full Self-Driving feature for autonomous driving on city streets is not yet available in the PRC.
