Former White House advisers and tech researchers sign statement against the harms of AI
Two former White House advisers on AI policy, as well as more than 150 academics and researchers, have signed a "Statement of Harm and Policy on AI". The letter was published at the Conference on Equity, Accountability and Transparency (ACM FaaCT).
Here's What We Know
The statement was signed by former deputy assistant to President Joe Biden, Alondra Nelson, and former White House adviser on the AI Bill of Rights Suresh Venkatasubramanian.
Unlike previous calls, ACM FaaCT's open letter focuses on the ongoing harmful effects of AI systems. The signatories call for policies based on existing research and tools.
Nelson also referred to the views of the AI Policy and Governance Working Group at the Institute for Advanced Study.
"The working group [...] agrees that many of the challenges posed by the increasing use of AI tools and their growing power need to be addressed," she said.
In addition to them, former Google employee Timnit Gebru and researchers from DeepMind, Microsoft, Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley signed the statement.
