FIFA used AI at the World Cup to detect insults on social media
Artificial intelligence has identified more than 300 people using online insults against players at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Their data will be handed over to law enforcement.
Here's What We Know
According to FIFA, users posted "abusive, discriminatory, or threatening posts [or] comments" on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. The biggest spike in abuse occurred during the France-England quarterfinal game.
Algorithms checked around 20 million posts and comments. More than 19,000 of them were flagged as abusive by the system.
38% of the detected abuses came from Europe and 36% from South America.
Data on more than 300 offenders will be handed over to law enforcement in the relevant jurisdictions. FIFA also called on platform owners to support the fight "against all forms of discrimination".
The system will be used in future FIFA Women's World Cup matches, which start next month in Australia and New Zealand.
