Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has unveiled a generative artificial intelligence method for car design.

Here's What We Know

Unlike conventional AI generative methods, the new technique allows original sketches and engineering features of cars to be added to the initial stage of the creative process. The AI can take into account constraints such as drag resistance, chassis dimensions and cab size.

The algorithm allows the designer to optimise engineering features while retaining textual stylistic cues for the generative AI process. For example, a user can request a set of design options based on a prototype sketch with specific properties, such as "sleek", "SUV-like" and "modern"'.

The team's research work has focused on aerodynamic drag. However, the approach could also optimise any other performance metrics or constraints derived from the design image.

Toyota believes the tool will help design cars faster and more efficiently.
