NASA to create a ChatGPT counterpart for astronauts
NASA is developing a system that will allow astronauts to perform manoeuvres and experiments using a chatbot interface in natural language.
Here's What We Know
"The idea is to get to a point where we have conversational interactions with space vehicles and they [are] also talking back to us on alerts, interesting findings they see in the solar system and beyond," said Dr Larissa Suzuki.
NASA plans to deploy a system on its Lunar Gateway space station, which will orbit the moon and support the Artemis mission. It will be based on a language interface that will allow astronauts to get advice on experiments or manoeuvres without having to dive into complicated manuals.
According to NASA, artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies will also be needed to control various systems in an unoccupied state. These include autonomous science payload operations, data prioritisation, autonomous operations, station health management and more.
For example, Suzuki described a scenario where the system automatically clears failures and inefficiencies in data transfer.
"We cannot send an engineer up in space whenever a space vehicle goes offline or its software breaks somehow," she said.
