EU members, the European Commission and 128 partners will allocate €220 million to create four new testing and experimentation facilities (TEFs) to ensure the development of reliable AI.

Here's What We Know

The centres are physical and virtual facilities where AI-based software and hardware technologies can be tested under real-world conditions.

The TEFs will also act as a 'safety filter' between new digital technologies and citizens, providing a responsible and community-ready approach to creating reliable AI.

Each centre focuses on a distinct high-impact sector. These include:

  • manufacturing;
  • healthcare;
  • agriculture and food;
  • cities and communities.

The centres are expected to inform policy makers and facilitate the implementation of the AI Act by supporting regulatory sandboxes and enabling collaboration with national authorities.

The TEFs is scheduled to be launched in January 2024. The first services will be launched as early as July 2023.
