Google has stopped developing Project Iris AR glasses. Three people "familiar with the matter" told Insider.

Here's What We Know

According to the publication, Google is focusing on the software, not the device. It is creating a "micro XR" platform that it could license to other headset manufacturers.

According to sources, Project Iris suffered layoffs and strategy changes during development. Also, head of VR/AR Clay Bavor left the company four months ago.

However, Insider suggests that the headset is still in limbo, as the tech giant is no longer building them all on its own. In February, Google, Samsung and Qualcomm made an announcement about how the three companies were working together on a new mixed reality platform.

No further information has emerged since then, but the publication's sources claim Google's glasses "were actually the foundations" of Samsung's upcoming headset.
